Modern

There are so many wonderful textile designs by Lucienne Day (1917 - 2010).
The patterns below were produced in the 1950s and 60s, but still look fresh and contemporary.
Good design endures.

Fritillary
screen printed linen / 1954

Perpetua
screen printed rayon taffeta / 1953

Causeway
screen printed cotton / 1967

Some of her textile designs can still be bought at Classic Textiles

Be Bold

When it really comes down to it, my idea of perfect visual communication is bold, simple, and effective.
The great graphic designer Saul Bass (1920 -1996) was a master of this approach.

Anatomy of a Murder
film poster / 1959
The Man with the Golden Arm
film poster / 1955
Vertigo
film poster / 1958

A collection of his film title sequences can be viewed at Notcoming.com

"I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares." - Saul Bass

Colour!

I love colour. It's hard to hold back with colour sometimes, but then again, why should you?
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 -2000) is one of my favourite artists for this reason.

Skyscraper on Stilts in the Style of Le Corbusier and Village Church
watercolour on wrapping paper primed with chalk / 1951

Irinaland over the Balkans
serigraph / 1971

Take Care When You Walk Through the Prairie
aquatint colour etching / 1976

"The arts should be positive, free, romantic, beautiful, something like a jewel, something which you cannot do without." - Hundertwasser
